At approximately 4:43 a.m., a dump truck was headed eastbound on the New York Thruway, between the Manchester (Exit 43) and Geneva (Exit 42) exits, when the box of the truck apparently lifted and struck a bridge overpass. Two of the children were airlifted to Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Rochester while other victims were transported by ambulance to several surrounding hospitals. A second vehicle heading eastbound struck the box shortly after the initial accident. 31-year-old Josef Compton of Springfield, NJ was driving the vehicle that was carrying two other adults and four children. Police reported that the vehicle’s driver and passengers were taken to surrounding hospitals for treatment as well. The eastbound path of the Thruway was closed for several hours after the incident.
