Description:

A hailstorm left six Grinnell College students with badly bruised bodies Tuesday. The storm was part of thunderstorms that produced powerful winds Tuesday, said John Hinsberger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines. He said a funnel was spotted in Poweshiek County but it may not have touched down. Hail also damaged property near Monroe. Power lines and poles snapped near Sully, Hinsberger said. The six Grinnell track and field athletes on a training run were caught in the open when hard rain, high winds and heavy hail pelted them. Pat and Steve Crawford, out for a drive after the storm, were flagged down by a young man covered with welts. The couple offered to give him a ride into town, and he asked them if they could wait for his friends, who were injured and inside a nearby house. “The hail just beat the tar out of them,” Crawford said. “They were shivering and cold and hurt, and I thought they looked like they needed a mom.” The four piled into the Crawfords’ van. “They said they were worried about a tornado and they got in a ditch,” she said. “But then the hail came and just tore them up.” Grinnell College issued a statement saying the four athletes were treated at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and released. Another two runners made it to campus and were evaluated by the training staff. The college did not release the names of the students, and the students declined interview requests . Elsewhere in Grinnell, trees collapsed on houses, penetrating roofs. In the 1000 block of High Street , Dave Ford assessed damage to one of his rental properties Wednesday. Grinnell College students who rent the house were not injured when a tree slammed into it. Ford said the roof of the house was replaced a few years ago following a hailstorm and he “just bought it about six months ago.” Now there’s a large hole in the roof. One of the second- floor walls may be leaning a little to one side. An electric meter was pulled away from the house next door, and the gutters were ripped off Ford’s house. Grinnell Mayor Gordon R. Canfield said storm clean-up is likely to run about $1million for the city.
