Situation Update No. 1 On 2009-12-25 at 05:08:09 [UTC] Event: Extreme Weather Location: Spain MultiProvinces Provinces of Cádiz,Sevilla and Andalusia Situation: Some roads are flooded and rail services are suspended, while in Cádiz many homes are without power. The storm of rain and wind has caused serious structural damage across Andalucía. 22 roads are blocked and several rail links between Sevilla, Huelva, Granada and Jaén are also affected. The NIV road between Jerez and Cádiz has a half a kilometre closed due to flooding following another night or wind and rain, which has led to local flooding in some areas. The access road to the Sierra Nevada is closed by an accumulation of snow. 54 litres per square metre of rain were collected in the last 24 hours in Málaga, 40 in Almería, 33 in Sevilla, 31 in Córdoba and 30 in Cádiz, and all that in addition to the rain which has fallen almost continuously since Sunday. There are serious power cuts in the Cádiz Bay area, although supplies are expected to be restored during the day today. Some 1,500 homes are still affected in El Puerto de Santa María, Chiclana and San Fernando. Lightening cut the power to Torrox in Málaga for 12 hours. Many advertising hoardings and other items have been blown down, along with trees and the wall of a school in Córdoba, but despite the damage there are no reports of any injuries or fatalities in the region. | | | |
