Situation Update No. 2 On 2009-12-25 at 05:21:51 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: Brazil State of Pará Amazon River Number of Deads: 14 person(s) Number of Missing: 6 person(s) Number of Evacuated: 94 person(s) Situation: Brazilian rescuers have recovered the bodies of 14 people, who have been killed in a ship accident in the Amazon River, local media said on Friday citing rescue sources. The "Almirante Barroso" vessel capsized late on Monday near the remote jungle city of Monte Alegre, apparently after hitting a sand spit. About 100 passengers managed to swim to safety. One woman is still listed as missing. A team of divers and a helicopter continue search efforts. Rescuers say the vessel might have been overloaded with passengers and luggage, which caused it to capsize. Some 80 people drowned last year in eight major shipwrecks in the Amazon River basin. In one of the deadliest similar accidents in the area, 48 people died in May 2008 when the Comandante Sales boat sank in the Solimoes River, one of the Amazon's largest tributaries. | | | |
