Situation Update No. 1 On 2009-12-21 at 04:19:18 [UTC] Event: Cold Wave Location: Poland Statewide Number of Deads: 29 person(s) Situation: Twenty-nine people people have frozen to death throughout Poland during the weekend's bitter cold wave that has dropped temperatures to minus 20 degrees Celsius, police said Sunday in Warsaw. Most of the dead were homeless and alcohol-dependent men between 30 and 50 years of age. The latest deaths brought to 71 the number of people who have died in Poland from exposure since early December. A police spokeswoman appealed to people to come to the aid of the homeless and those who were drunk on the street. "In such cases nobody should simply pass on by," she said. "They should inform the authorities." Police were searching empty houses, garden sheds and city parks to bring the homeless to shelters. | | | | |
