Situation Update No. 2 On 2009-12-21 at 11:30:39 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: Croatia Capital City Zagreb Number of Injured: 50 person(s) Situation: Some 50 passengers were injured on Monday when a train failed to stop and hit a buffer at the main Zagreb station, police said. The accident, involving a train travelling from the central town of Sisak to Zagreb, took place early in the morning. According to the hospital sources, one person suffered a life-threatening injury, while some 40 people required medical assistance. Police said it was still unclear what caused the accident. Train travel in Croatia has been disrupted in recent days due to heavy snow and very low temperatures. Six people died and 55 were injured in a train crash last July near the Adriatic city of Split. Several employees of the state railway company HZ were arrested for that crash on suspicion of professional misconduct relating to the improper use of a flame-retardant liquid on the track which prevented train from braking. Court action is still pending. | | | | |
