Situation Update No. 5 On 2009-12-20 at 14:23:25 [UTC] Event: Snow Storm Location: United Kingdom England England-wide Number of Deads: 2 person(s) Number of Evacuated: 2000 person(s) Situation: Severe weather conditions in the South and east of England have disrupted the travel plans of many revelers in the upcoming festive season. Due to the bad weather, Manchester airport has been closed. And flights from London and other nearby airports are being delayed or totally cancelled. According to the weather reports, more snowfall is expected in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and northern England. It sure is going to be a white-Christmas for most of England. At Heathrow Airport, British Airways said the snow had caused “long delays throughout Friday and also some cancellations”. “Unfortunately we have had aircraft and crews out of position causing knock-on effects to our Saturday schedule,” it said in a statement. Many of the affected airlines are asking the customers to check for the flight status before, either on phone or on the Internet, prior to coming to the airport. British Airways is asking its customers to check its website www.ba.com for all the relevant information on the flights, before landing up at the airport. British Airways flight 215 to Boston, Massachusetts, was due to take off at 1600 GMT on Friday. Passengers got to board the flight at 1900 GMT but found themselves still waiting to take off at 0100 GMT. ‘The flight was delayed for so long, crew had to be replaced because they would have exceeded their hours if they had stayed on board’, said passenger Simon Wilson-Taylor. | | | | |
