Situation Update No. 3 On 2009-12-23 at 14:22:16 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Incident Location: Jamaica Capital City Kingston Number of Injured: 91 person(s) Situation: Ninety-one people are injured after their American Airlines plane overran a runway near Kingston, Jamaica. According to officials the plane careened into a fence during bad weather. Reports from the scene say none of the injuries were life-threatening however four were serious. American Airlines Flight 331 departed from Miami, Florida carrying 148 passengers and six crew members, according to a statement from the airline. Officials from Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston report the crash took place around 10:20 p.m., at the time of the incident the area was under heavy rain and poor visibility. Most of the passengers were Jamaicans going home for Christmas. An American Airlines spokesman reports that the Boeing 737 suffered damage to the fuselage, cracks, and the landing gear on one side of the plane collapsed. Published reports reveal most of the 91 passengers injured have been released from the hospitals they were initially treated at. | | | | |
