Situation Update No. 7 On 2009-12-21 at 10:27:48 [UTC] Event: Biological Hazard Location: Netherlands Statewide Situation: The Dutch government has begun culling goats and sheep on farms infected with the bacteria that causes Q fever, an animal-borne disease that can cause flulike symptoms in people. An unusually large outbreak of the rare disease is believed to have infected 2,300 people and caused 6 human deaths in the Netherlands in 2009. An agriculture ministry spokesman says culling has begun on three out of sixty farms currently identified as having infected animals. In all 40,000 infected goats and sheep will be killed over the coming month, and twice that many before the birthing season begins in March as more cases are identified. Thijs van Son said Monday a heavy snow that has crippled traffic in much of the country would not affect the cull. | | | | |
