2009-12-23 19:21:03 - Vehicle Accident - USA EDIS CODE: VI-20091223-24283-USA Date & Time: 2009-12-23 19:21:03 [UTC] Area: USA, State of Georgia, Gwinnett County, Interstate 85, Number of Injured person(s): 12 Damage level: Moderate (Level 2) Not confirmed information! Description: Gwinnett County police have detained the driver believed to have caused a small bus carrying developmentally disabled adults to overturn on I-85 on Wednesday afternoon. Police say a woman driving a black Honda Accord caused the wreck around 12:15 p.m. between Pleasant Hill Road and Ga. 316. The accident left three passengers with life-threatening injuries and nine others with serious injuries. At least one passenger was airlifted from the scene. The driver stopped following the accident, but left before police arrived. She was "located shortly after the accident," police spokesman Officer Brian Kelly said. The wreck shut down all northbound lanes of I-85, and they won't reopen until 2:45 p.m., the State Department of Transportation said. The Accord hit the back of the bus, causing it to skid across several lanes and flip on its side before hitting the guardrail and righting itself, police said. There were 13 passengers, plus the driver, on the bus. The bus was operated by Just People Inc., a Norcross -based organization that, according to its Web site, "provides a wide variety of support services to adults with developmental disabilities." Kelly said the bus was taking "special-needs individuals to an art class in Hoschton." The person answering the phone at the Just People office Wednesday afternoon said the agency had no comment on the wreck.
