Description:

Nineteen students, including 10 girls, were injured when the boat in which they were crossing the backwaters on their way to school capsized at Sangolikuppam near here on Wednesday. They were admitted to the Cuddalore Headquarters Government Hospital. About 28 others either swam ashore or were rescued by fishermen. Sangeetha (14) and Vidhya (14), both studying in Class IX, told this correspondent that in all 47 persons, a majority of them students, took the boat at Nochikadu. The boat was manually operated by pulling the ropes, with the ends tied to the permanent structures on the banks. As the boat was nearing the Sangolikuppam bank a group of students suddenly got up to alight, causing it to tilt and capsize. They fell overboard with their bags and other belongings. Those waiting for the boat at the Sangolikuppam end jumped into the water and rescued many of them. Some students suffered injuries in the head and limbs as they were caught beneath the overturned boat. All of them are out of danger. Chandrakala (51), mother of an injured student, said the students at Nochikadu were mostly studying in the Poondianguppam government school. They used to take the boat up to Sangolikuppam and from there they either took a bus or went on foot to the school. Since, the bus plying on the Nochikadu-Sangolikuppam route comes too early, at 8 a.m., students preferred taking the boat. The skeleton bus services in the morning are hardly sufficient to meet the demand, Ms. Chandrakala said.
