Situation Update No. 11
On 2010-01-28 at 14:28:14 [UTC]

Event: Flash Flood
Location: Peru Urubamba Valley Machu Picchu

Number of Deads: 7 person(s)

Situation:

Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Martin Perez, said that a total of 36 flights transported on Wednesday 595 people who were stranded in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town). Perez said that so far a total of 1,140 people have been rescued, so there would be another 800 people waiting, which could be airlifted on Thursday “provided the weather is favorable,” reported RPP. He also recalled that there were still tourists moving along the Inca Trail, who might be arriving to the citadel anytime. For this reason, the complete evacuation may take another three or four days. Perez said that each rescue flight is carrying food supplies, but it is clear that the rate at which food is consumed is much larger than the capacity of the helicopters to transport food.
