Event: Flash Flood
Location: Peru Urubamba Valley Machu Picchu

Number of Deads: 7 person(s)

Situation:

Sixteen of 34 South Korean tourists stranded in mudslides in Peru have been rescued, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Thursday. They were travelling to Peru's famed archaeological site Machu Picchu. "Now, 18 are awaiting rescue with 16 of the 34 having been pulled out," ministry spokesman Lee Young-sun said. Lee said none of the stranded Koreans had experienced health or safety problems. The railway line, which carries some 2,500 tourists daily to Peru's biggest tourist attraction, was flooded after days of heavy rains. That caused the Vilcanota River to rise to its highest level in 25 years, flooding roads and train lines in the area. Helicopters have been the only way to rescue people so far, Kim Jin-chul, a Korean consular to Peru, said. Reports said an Argentine tourist and her Peruvian tour guide were killed and three people were injured on Tuesday after a landslide on the Inca Trail. Another eight people were killed by landslides in the Cusco region. Around 6,000 people have been left homeless after floods and landslides devastated the region, the report said.
