Event: Explosion
Location: Belgium Province de Liege Liege

Number of Deads: 9 person(s)
Number of Injured: 21 person(s)
Number of Evacuated: 50 person(s)

Situation:

The death toll from a collapsed apartment block in eastern Belgium rose to nine on Thursday and a minister said it could increase to as high as 15 to 20. A suspected gas leak blew up the terraced block of flats early on Wednesday in a street in the centre of the city of Liege, damaging adjoining buildings and shattering windows. Firefighters suspended rescue efforts because of fears other buildings could collapse. Workers were seeking to stabilise the neighbouring blocks to allow the search to continue. Officials said they expected more bodies to be found. "We are thinking that it could rise to between 15 and 20," Interior Minister Annemie Turtelboom told parliament when asked about the likely death toll. The explosion and collapse injured 21 people, three of them seriously. One girl was pulled out alive from the rubble early on Wednesday afternoon.
