Event: Snow Storm
Location: Germany Statewide Situation: About 80 flights at Frankfurt Airport and about 60 at Munich Airport were canceled Thursday due to snowy conditions, the operators of Germany's two biggest airports said. In addition, Germany's high-speed rail system has seen disruptions on some of its busiest routes. Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport AG said it had to temporarily close a runway, but hoped to have it cleaned and open again by midmorning. It said it hopes to see traffic back to normal within the course of the day. Frankfurt Airport is Germany's biggest and Europe's third busiest airport after Paris' Charles de Gaulle and London's Heathrow. Munich Airport GmbH, Germany's second biggest, said it saw 60 flights canceled because of the weather, but that conditions were improving. Munich Airport also said business should get back to normal during the day. A spokesman for the German railway system said Thursday that high-speed trains have been delayed because of de-icing procedures and snow drifts across the tracks. The routes from Munich to Bremen and from Berlin to Cologne have been hardest hit, with trains running at half capacity. In addition, there are reports of the express trains having to run at slower speeds because of the weather conditions, adding to delays. A large storm front covered much of Germany with snow Wednesday night into Thursday, adding to what has been an unusually cold and snowy winter. |  | | | |
