Description:

Aurora Empowerment Systems Ltd., a South African gold mining company, said it is evacuating 800 miners at its East Rand Mines operation after flooding made the shafts unsafe. “Ordinarily, East Rand Mines pumps 80 million liters of water per day, critical in ensuring the viability of operations,” the company said in an e-mail today. “However, due to above-average water levels being experienced at this time, the pumping rate has been increased to 120 million liters per day. Despite these efforts, water seepage has remained at unsafe levels.” Aurora bought East Rand Mines from the liquidators of Pamodzi Gold Ltd. last year. Its managing director is Zondwa Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, the country’s first black president, and its chairman is Khulubuse Zuma, the nephew of President Jacob Zuma. The company plans to begin trading its shares on Johannesburg’s stock exchange in the first quarter of this year, Zondwa Mandela said in a Dec. 17 interview in Johannesburg.
