Description:

At least 18 people died in Peru when the bus they were travelling in fell down a 80-metre-high ravine in the central Peruvian region of Huancavelica, police said Friday. The accident happened just before midnight Thursday, when the bus travelling between the towns of Acobamba and Huancayo crashed in a rural area known as Carpas, in the Andes, about 300 kilometres north of Lima. Several people were injured, some of them seriously, and has to be taken to nearby hospitals. Accidents of this kind are relatively common in Peru, and are generally due to negligence from bus drivers, to the vehicles' poor condition or to the country's difficult geography, which makes it risky to drive on many roads. Many Peruvians have no access to any other means of transportation, since the bus is all they can afford.
