Situation:

At least nine people, including a child, drowned when an overcrowded boat carrying them capsized in southern India Saturday, officials said. Many of the passengers were believed to be Hindu pilgrims. The accident happened between before 7:30 a.m. (9 p.m. ET Friday) in Andhra Pradesh state's West Godavari district, according to authorities. About 40 passengers were able to swim to safety, top district administrator Vani Prasad told CNN. Nine dead bodies, including those of four women, have been recovered so far, she said. "About five to six to 10 people could still be missing, unfortunately," she said. Rescue operations are in full swing." The boat toppled about 100 feet from the shore of a river, she said.
