Description: A ferry boat sank near Verde Island in Batangas province Saturday night, according to radio reports. The reports quoted Philippine Coast Guard sources as saying the ferry, owned by Montenegro Shipping Lines, was bound for Batangas City when it sank. The Coast Guard was still trying to determine the cause of the sinking. But a passenger interviewed by GMA News said the ferry was hit by big waves while off Verde Island. She said the ferry was full of passengers but could not say exactly how many passengers were on board. She related seeing some passengers being picked up from the sea by vessels which had responded to distress calls by the ferry’s crew.
