Description:

Italian authorities have seized some 500 tons of seafood, including over 300 tons of parasite-infested anchovies, that were destined for sale to consumers, officials announced Wednesday. "The 323 tons of anchovies with worms represents an extraordinary haul, as does the 71 tons of fish from Asia that were going to be sold as if it were of Italian origin," Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia said in a statement. Some 80 tons of deep-frozen mussels whose sell-by date had expired by between four and five years, were also intercepted, Zaia said. Coastguard officials and police confiscated the seafood in a two-week operation that began on December 10. Over 300 charges have been filed with the judiciary, while fines worth some 1.5 million euros (2.2 million dollars) have been issued. Zaia has been spearheading the Italian government's campaign to introduce compulsory labelling on all food and beverages sold in the European Union - a measure which would allow consumers to identify the source of the products.
