Description:

High winds, heavy rains and freezing overnight temperatures are causing problems in many parts of the country today. Severe weather conditions are set to continue across the country with temperature lows of -10C forecast for tomorrow night. The National Roads Authority has meanwhile expressed concern that supplies of rock salt road grit are running very low in some areas. Today, there are reports of flooding in counties Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. All train services in and out of Heuston Station in Dublin are delayed by 30 to 40 minutes due to flooding on the line at Hazelhatch, Co Kildare. Iarnród Éireann said trains are passing through the flooded area but the journey is taking longer than usual. Separately, services between Limerick and Ennis have been suspended due to flooding. Bus transfers are in operation. AA Roadwatch has warned motorists to drive with extreme care and to watch out for debris or fallen trees on the roads. It says there is flooding on the Midleton to Lisgoold Road, on the Mogeely to Killeagh Road and around Innishannon Village on the N71 (Killarney to Cork Road). The N22 (Cork to Macroom Road) is closed at Farran due to flooding. In Dublin, the Estuary Road between Seabury and the M1 viaduct in Swords is impassable due to flooding. In Co Kildare, the Kill to Straffan Road is impassable due to heavy flooding and fallen trees, while the Kilcullen to Dunlavin Road is closed at Carnalway. In Co Wicklow, the Wicklow Gap and Sally Gap are impassable due to snow and ice as is the Glencree area. Ice and snow are also reported to be causing problems in other parts of the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. The National Roads Authority has expressed concern that supplies of specialised road grit throughout Ireland are running extremely low. An NRA spokesperson said it is in contact with local authorities who are responsible for all road gritting to assess the situation. The NRA is particularly concerned about the situation in counties Roscommon, Galway, Clare, Mayo and Sligo. A shipment of 8,000 tonnes of rock salt is due in Limerick on Wednesday. Until the shipment arrives, the NRA said local authorities will have to work together to try and keep roads gritted. The ESB has confirmed that around 1,000 homes in the Clifden Town and Cleggan areas are without power. Strong winds damaged several power lines in the area last night. Repair crews are currently working to fix the damage and power should be restored to all homes by later today.
