Description:

Strong winds of 50-60 kilometers per hour from the southeast battered the coastal district of Bodrum in Muğla province on Sunday night, while flash floods caused heavy damage to restaurants, hotels and motels. The winds and flooding also caused traffic problems on coastal highways in Bodrum and the neighboring areas. The wind, known as the lodos, also damaged communication and power lines. The high winds whipped up waves of five to six meters, and many cargo vessels were forced to dock. The ground floors of many restaurants, bars and several hotels were flooded in the downtown district, in the Gümbet, Bitez and Ortakent-Yahºi neighborhoods and on the Kumbahçe coast. Sports equipment in coastal areas was washed out to sea, and coastal roads in the Ortakent-Yahºi and Turgutreis neighborhoods were flooded, and potholes opened up along a six-kilometer stretch. Ahmet Dumanyakan (24), a construction worker who was on his way to work in the early hours of the day, sustained head injuries after a billboard fell on him. The Bodrum Municipality and the Port Directorate advised fishermen and boat owners not to leave the port. Solar energy panels on rooftops were also heavily damaged. As the lodos died down on Monday, municipal workers began the process of cleaning up.
