Description:

At least two children died and 10,000 families displaced when continuous rains triggered floods and landslides in Mindanao, officials said Friday. Blanche Gobenchiong, director of the Office of the Civil Defense in Caraga, said two girls died after being swept by waters from a swollen river in Barangay Pagaupua, San Francisco town, Agusan del Sur on Wednesday. Gobenchiong said rescuers later recovered the bodies of Lovely Agunos, 9; and Jaline Noja, 11. He said the heavy rains since Monday caused floods which forced some 48,196 individuals out of their homes to safer areas. “Heavy rains inundated many parts of Caraga, particularly the low-lying municipalities along the Agusan River and Lake Mainit,” she said. Gobenchiong said worst-hit areas were the towns of Santiago, Mainit and Jabonga in Agusan del Norte; and the towns of San Francisco, Prosperidad and San Luis in Agusan del Sur. She said landslides were also reported in at least two towns on Dinagat Island. Gobenchiong placed the agricultural damage at P80 million.

In Davao del Sur, a landslide also hit Sitio Lapuan in Barangay Lanao in Don Marcelio town. Roderick Milana, provincial disaster coordinator, said no one was injured in the landslide that destroyed several houses on Wednesday. Eight families, he said, were affected. “Their crops and other products had also been damaged,” Milana said. He said that due to the nonstop rains, the disaster council was tightly monitoring the situations in Don Marcelino, Malita, Sta. Maria and Jose Abad Santos towns, where major landslides had been recorded in the past. “We are also monitoring the towns of Magsaysay, Matanao, Bansalan, Padada, Sulop and Malalag because these are the flashflood-prone areas of Davao del Sur,” Milana said. He also urged people living near river banks to be always on alert.
