Description:

The crew of a Singapore-registered ship rescued two Malaysian fishermen whose boat had capsized off Pedra Branca early yesterday morning. The ship, CS Asean Restorer, had been notified at about 11.45pm on Tuesday by the crew of a nearby anchored vessel who had heard the men’s cries for help. CS Asean Restorer’s captain Timothy Tan, 54, told The Straits Times: “We launched our rescue boat the moment we heard that there were men in the water. The current was quite strong at the time.” His 132m-long vessel was carrying a crew that had been performing repair works on an underwater telecommunications cable near Pedra Branca since it left Singapore on Jan 12. They are due back this evening. The two fishermen, Abu Bakar Abdul, 50, and Subari Husin, 28, were spotted about six nautical miles off Pedra Branca 40 minutes later. Captain Tan said: “They were exhausted and dizzy when we brought them back. They were in the water for too long a time.” The two men, who had been drifting at sea for more than five hours, told their rescuers that their fishing nets had become entangled with a rock outcrop on Tuesday evening. They were unable to free the nets, and their 8m-long fishing boat capsized as it was pulled under by currents. The two men then clung onto the wreckage till help came. A Malaysian coast guard vessel later picked them up. This is the second vessel to capsize near Pedra Branca in under a month. On Jan 6, the Singapore-registered tugboat Ocean Lark carrying a crew of 13 capsized. Only two men survived the accident. Four people are still missing.
