Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Democratic Republic of the Congo Virunga Mountains Mount Nyamuragira Volcano

Situation:

The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has offered air support to authorities after the eruption of a volcano in the east of the country, a UN spokesman said. Reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters were being used to monitor the flow of lava from Mount Nyamulagira, according to the spokesman. The volcano erupted at the weekend. The provincial capital Goma and its surrounding areas, where tens of thousands of people displaced by the conflict in the restive North Kivu province live, was not at risk. Conservationists are however concerned for the well-being of rare chimpanzees in an area affected by the lava in a part of the Virunga National Park. The reserve is also home to nearly 300 mountain gorillas. Mount Nyamulagira, considered one of Africa's most active volcanos, last erupted in 2006.
