Description: A ship spilled oil over 1,600 square kilometers of Vietnamese sea off the coast of Binh Dinh Province in the south-central region Monday. The VITAMIN GAS boat departed Vung Tau on the southern coast last Saturday and was carrying 70 tons of oil products, including diesel oil and 795 tons of liquefied gas, to Cua Lo in the northern province of Nghe An. Waves broke open the hold door and caused cracks as the boat sailed to 85 kilometers to the north of Quy Nhon. Water rushed into the ship and began sinking the vessel on Sunday. Caption Nguyen Viet Chien then beached the ship on a sandbar in Quy Nhon to save it from sinking. The over ship, which belongs to the Asia-Pacific Marine Transport Company, had 12 Vietnamese sailors aboard. The southbound vessel Dai Nam 19 came to VITAMIN’s aid after a distress call and helped tug the ship to port. Asia-Pacific has surrounded the oil spill area with three layers of buoys. Binh Dinh border guards have also sent boats to help in the aftermath of the accident.
