The mudslide, which followed several hours of heavy overnight rain, buried roads, vehicles, and at least a dozen houses in the Ayacucho region of Peru, southeast of Lima. At least five people are in hospital and 15 others injured, Ayacucho's civil defense director, Cesar Echegaray, told Canal N. About 600 people are estimated to have been affected by the slide, which took place late Wednesday. A number of government officials, including Prime Minister Javier Velasquez, are on their way to the area.
