Description:

Veterinary authorities in Amuru district have imposed a quarantine on the movement of cattle following an outbreak of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia in four sub-counties. The district veterinary officer, Dr. James Okwir, said the affected sub-counties were Purongo, Anaka, Alero and Amuru where the disease has killed about 30 cows so far. He said they had restricted the movement of the animals, including their products like beef, milk, hides and skins to and from the affected areas to avoid spreading the disease. "The disease is characterised by severe cough that affects the lungs of the animals, loss of weight and dying after a few days," Okwir explained. He said cattle in the affected areas have not been vaccinated against the disease due to problems in obtaining the vaccine from Entebbe. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the cattle disease could have spread to Amuru from Nebbi since there is free movement of cattle and other animals across the two districts.
