Description:

Buckets of rain - more than 10 inches in parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties - flooded homes, stranded drivers and even left a firetruck dead in the water as it answered a call. Flood warnings issued Thursday evening were reissued later that night as the water backed up, leaving some streets impassable and water reportedly up the the windows of some Southeast Broward homes. More than 2,000 residents - 1,100 in Broward and 900 in Miami-Dade - had lost power by 10 p.m., Florida Power & Light reported. Abandoned cars littered Sheridan Street in Hollywood into the night. Streets in the Hollywood Lakes section east of U.S. 1 were three feet deep in water. officers were sent out in four-wheel-drive vehicles to provide assistance, said Hollywood police spokeswoman Raelin Storey. In downtown Miami, those brave enough to drive splashed through knee-deep water on Biscayne Boulevard. One impatient pedestrian, obviously fond of his footwear, took off his sneakers and crossed the street in his stocking feet. Flash flood warning were issued for cities throughout Miami-Dade and Broward, first around 5 p.m. and again later Thursday night. In Hollywood's North Lake section, most streets were impassable, with water two to three feet deep in some parts. Some longtime residents said they had not seen this much rain in almost 20 years. "The last time we had a storm like this, our kids were little,'' said Robert Calabrese, who has lived on Buchanan Street for more than 30 years. "We had canoes and the kids took the canoes and paddled out in the street.'' In downtown Hollywood, where people were celebrating at holiday parties, they suddenly noticed waves lapping at their feet. Worse is set to come Friday.
