2010-01-22 04:21:57 - Tornado - USA EDIS CODE: TO-20100122-24650-USA Date & Time: 2010-01-22 04:21:57 [UTC] Area: USA, State of Mississippi, Copiah County, Damage level: Heavy (Level 3) Not confirmed information! Description: An EF2 tornado is responsible for damaging property in Copiah County, the National Weather Service has determined. An area just outside Hazlehurst seems to have been the epicenter. A Weather Service survey team said the tornado began 2.5 miles southeast of Hazlehurst and ended after traveling four miles. The tornado had maximum winds of 115 mph, a path length of 3.9 miles and a maximum width of 500 yards. It started along James Road and traveled northeast, reaching its maximum intensity and width while crossing Monticello Road where hundreds of trees snapped and uprooted, including a number of large hardwoods. A barn was leveled, and at least two power poles snapped. The tornado continued northeast, crossing Perrett Road and Mississippi 472. Along that path, numerous trees continued to snap and uproot, and several out buildings were damaged or destroyed. The tornado dissipated shortly after crossing Mississippi 472. Thursday afternoon, crews worked to restore electricity there while residents picked up scattered tree limbs. Only a few shingles were blown off of Jim Dunlap’s James Road home. After clearing debris from his yard, he walked next door to help neighbor, Casey McCordle. “It wasn’t too bad,” Dunlap said. “We lucked out. As soon as my family got up, got our shoes on and headed out the door, it blew through.” Others in the area weren’t as lucky, but no homes were destroyed.
