Description: Heavy snow fell across areas of northern Japan on Thursday, leaving one man dead. According to the Meteorological Agency, a strong cold air mass brought heavy snow mainly to areas along the Sea of Japan side in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions on Thursday. Many of the places reportedly had 30 to 40 centimeters of snowfall in 24 hours until 5 p.m. on Thursday, including the Gifu Prefecture village of Shirakawa with 47 centimeters and Tsuruoka with 33 centimeters. Heavy snow is expected to continue through Saturday, with the predicted 24-hour snowfall until 6 p.m. on Friday of 80 centimeters on the Sea of Japan side in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions and of 50 centimeters in Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The man who died, Kuichi Watanabe, 73, was found lying in front of the entrance of his home in Tsuruoka on Thursday morning and was later confirmed dead due to acute heart failure at a hospital. Watanabe is believed to have fallen to the snow-covered ground after collapsing while removing snow from the roof.
