Situation Update No. 14 On 2009-12-18 at 12:39:15 [UTC] Event: Volcano Eruption Location: Philippines Province of Albay, Bicol Region Mayon Volcano Number of Evacuated: 50000 person(s) Situation: Mayon Volcano registered on Thursday seven minor eruptions and 248 volcanic quakes within 12 hours, prompting the provincial government to declare a state of emergency throughout Albay. With the state of emergency over the province, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda ordered the forced evacuation of all residents within the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and eight-kilometer extended danger zone. Army trucks came to fetch and assist the residents leave their homes. The declaration authorizes the province to allot five percent of its budget for relief operation and other expenses involved related to the likely major eruption of Mayon Volcano. Salceda also set a midnight curfew in the province to prevent residents from returning to their homes and farms by using the night darkness as their cover. He suspended class in the elementary school level. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the minor explosions produced dark gray to dark brown ash columns that went up to a maximum of 1,000 meters above the summit. The lava flow from the volcano has reached three kilometers downslope from the crater as incandescent fragments from the lava pile are rolling down the Bonga Gully three to four kilometers downslope. Sulfur dioxide emission is at 1,065 tons a day. The Phivolcs cautioned residents and tourists from traveling on the active river channels and other waterways identified as lahar prone in the southern sector, particularly during bad weather or a heavy and prolonged rainfall. | | | | |
