Area: Zimbabwe, Province of Mashonaland Central, Mbire district,

Damage level: Heavy (Level 3)

Confirmed Information!

Description:

Four people were killed and about 100 households (HH) displaced following an attack by lions in Mbire district's Wards 1 and 2 in Mashonaland Central province last week. Mbire district authorities on 19 January 2010 reported that the affected families fled from their homesteads and sought refuge at nearby Chapoto Primary School in an area commonly known as Kanyemba while others erected makeshift shelters following the attacks. However, the school's facilities cannot accommodate the families without disrupting learning activities as the term is in progress, hence the need for an urgent solution. Although it is difficult to assess exact needs, humanitarian partners are mobilizing resources based on the estimated number of affected households. Urgent needs include food, shelter and water and sanitation facilities. Kanyemba, straddles Dande and Chewore safari areas and is therefore prone to invasions by dangerous wild animals.

The name of Hazard: Wild Animal Attack
Status: Confirmed
