Description:

Five people are missing and six injured after an explosion at a petrochemical plant belonging to China’s top state-owned oil firm, China National Petroleum Corporation. According to a state television report, one of the injured is in serious condition. The blast happened at an oil tank 19 miles from Lanzhou in northern Gansu Province. According to a PetroChina official, the blast hit a chemical storage tank in the chemical part of the complex and did not affect operations at the Lanzhou refinery. Lanzhou refinery, with a capacity of 200-thousand barrels per day, is one of the biggest in western China. Local environmental protection officials admitted dust levels within a half-mile radius from the plant are eight times higher than normal. The cause of the blast is still under investigation.
