Description: Rescue teams in the south of France have wrapped up their mission a day after giant waves swept six people off the French Riviera on New Year’s Day. At least three people were killed by the tidal sweeps. Rescue teams called off their search Saturday, following deadly giant waves that washed the shores of the French Riviera on New Year’s Day, killing at least three people. At the Cap Croisette in Marseille, an elderly couple was found washed up fully dressed on the beach Friday. They were believed to have died while trying to save a dog from the waves, police said, adding that their deaths are being treated as accidental. In separate incidents on the same stretch of the Cote d'Azur coastline, six beach-goers were engulfed by waves -- though five of them managed to make their way back to shore. A young woman of 28 however suffered a cardiac arrest after she was engulfed by waves stirred up by strong westerly winds. Coastal areas of Corsica also suffered extensive damage during the stormy weather. While the weather had significantly calmed on Saturday, the seas were rough, with waves rising to between 1.5 and 2 metres.
