Description:

Residents of Batu Ganda village in the Southeast Sulawesi regency of North Kolaka found the body of two-year-old toddler Siwa on Sunday, bringing the death toll in a flash flood that swept the area to 10. Local search and rescue team leader Hidayat said the residents evacuated Siwa’s remains from thick mud-covered Batu Ganda River after two days of search. Hidayat said the search was now underway for three more residents, identified as Talla, 51, Batti, 24, and Anna, 24. The police, military and the Indonesian Red Cross are joining the rescue efforts. The search team had confirmed the death of nine other residents, following the disaster that struck early on Friday. Four survivors are receiving medical treatment at the local hospital. The flash flood hit the village, situated 500 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Kendari, at about 2 a.m. after days of heavy rain. The disaster swept away at least 26 houses and severely damaged 45, displacing hundreds of people. Antara state news agency reported on Sunday some of the flood victims were seen rebuilding their homes, while the majority was staying at a refugee shelter erected by the local government.
