Description: St. Vincent’s University Hospital today announced it has imposed visitor restrictions due to an outbreak of the so-called winter vomiting virus. The Norovirus is currently affecting 34 patients through 10 wards and 27 staff members at the hospital. St Vincent’s has appealed the people to attend the Emergency Department only if necessary, to not visit patients unless it is essential, to not enter affected wards and to not bring children to the hospital. Members of the public who have symptoms such as "upset tummy" are also advised not to attend the hospital, located in Dublin 4, but to contact their doctor. In a statement, Bill Maher, director of operations, said: “We are taking all appropriate steps to combat the spread of this infection and these visiting restrictions are essential for the health and safety of patients, visitors and staff. "The virus appears to be coming in from community and we know from past experience that without the cooperation of the public this virus can spread very quickly throughout the hospital, causing discomfort to patients and further disrupting services."
