Situation Update No. 5 On 2010-01-11 at 09:38:35 [UTC] Event: Flash Flood Location: Kenya State of Rift Valley River Kilimo Naivasha Number of Deads: 30 person(s) Number of Missing: 60 person(s) Situation: At least 30 people have been killed by torrential rains and floods in Kenya since December, the Kenya Red Cross Society said today. The rains have killed more than 6,000 livestock and destroyed homes, household property, and crops, Titus Mungou, spokesman for the Kenya Red Cross Society, said in a phone interview today from Nairobi, the capital. About 30,000 people need urgent humanitarian assistance, the Red Cross said. “The flood-prone west Kenya region has been placed on high alert as heavy rains continue in several districts,” the group said in a statement on its Web site. Kenya is expected to receive higher than normal rainfall in the period corresponding to short rains between last October and January this year, it said. The Red Cross has provided non-food items for 730 households worth 3.85 million shillings ($51,136), assorted drugs and medical supplies worth 2.1 million shillings and water-treatment plants to serve northern parts of Rift Valley province that has been most affected by the floods, it added. | | | | |
