Description:

Eleven people have been killed and 1,200 others displaced by floods in the larger Turkana district over the last two weeks. One more person was swept by floods after River Turkwel burst its banks following heavy rains pounding the area while another died in Mogotio District. "Most of the displaced families are in need of relief supplies and shelter," said Mr Titus Mungou, the Kenya Red Cross Public Relations Manager. As a result of the rains, an acute fuel shortage has hit parts of Turkana District as the cost of petroleum products remained high in Western Kenya despite the withdrawal of a fuel inspection levy. Lodwar town has experienced acute fuel shortage for the past two days because supplies cannot reach the area after parts of Kapenguria-Lodwar highway was damaged by floods. Transport between Kitale and Lodwar towns has been interrupted after part of Marich bridge was swept away by floods. At the same time, oil marketers continued to charge high pump prices by between Sh3 and Sh4 per litre, two weeks after the inspection fee was removed. According to Mr Hezekiah Kosgei, an independent oil dealer, the price of diesel has increased from Sh69 to Sh72 per litre while that of supper petrol is up from Sh82.50 to Sh84.50 per litre. But some of the dealers claimed that they had not sold old stock to enable them to lower the prices. In Mogotio district one more person was swept away by raging floods on Sunday. The man, in his 40s, was trying to cross a seasonal stream in Koitabes area. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon.Since the beginning of the year, at least four people have died in Mogotio. Three other people have been reported killed by floods in neighbouring Nakuru. While confirming the Mogotio incident, area district commissioner Julius Ngumo urged the residents to exercise caution during this rainy season.
