Description:

Thirteen Mauritanians drowned when their pirogue capsized in a Senegalese river near the southern village of Bababe, Mauritania's official news agency said Wednesday. "Thirteen people, including a child, were found dead after this catastrophe" on the Senegal River which forms a natural border with Mauritania. The pirogue, also transporting wood, sunk while ferrying people from one side of the river to the other. The news agency did not specify the ages of the victims, but a community leader from the village of Seneboussobe, which lies on both sides of the river, said they were 13 young Mauritanian girls seeking firewood on the Senegalese side. "It's a task these girls do almost daily," said Abdoulaye Dia, adding that according to the boatman "a light breeze was blowing which caused the boat to capsize." "The 13 girls were buried on Wednesday in their village, which is still reeling from the shock of this drama," he added. Two people, including the boatman, were saved.
