Situation Update No. 3 On 2010-04-05 at 02:50:38 [UTC] Event: Landslide Location: Peru Departmento de Huanuco Ambo Number of Deads: 20 person(s) Number of Injured: 50 person(s) Number of Missing: 25 person(s) Situation: At least 20 people have died from two mudslides in the central Andes region of Peru this week. Dozens of homes have been buried and 25 people are reportedly missing. Lima, Peru - On Saturday, a mudslide in the north-eastern region of Peru killed at least 20 people and the death toll is expected to rise as 80 homes were buried as a result and 25 are reportedly missing. The landslide was triggered by heavy rain and local authorities discovered 14 bodies in the Huallaga River and six others were buried in the mud covering the town of Ambo in the Huanuco region. This was the second mudslide since Thursday when five people were killed in the town of Cancejos. 50 people have been injured, 600 are homeless and 120 homes were destroyed. Many authorities in the region believe the death toll could climb to at least 50 people. Prime Minister Javier Velasquez and members of the Housing, Agriculture and Transport ministries will travel to the region to assess the damage and “bring necessary aid in support of the Huanuco regional government.” | | | | |
