Situation Update No. 6 On 2010-04-06 at 17:27:58 [UTC] Event: Earthquake Location: Mexico State of Baja California 12 km NE Guadalupe Victoria Number of Deads: 2 person(s) Number of Injured: 100 person(s) Number of Evacuated: 300 person(s) Situation: Mexico California earthquake triggered 500 aftershocks; photos of damage. Sunday night, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Baja California and over 500 aftershocks have hit the area from Sunday until Tuesday morning. Five of the aftershocks had a magnitude of 5 or greater causing many Mexico and California residents to be concerned for their safety. Some experts are saying that the aftershocks could last for a month or longer, but that the possibility of a larger earthquake diminishes with every day that passes. This was the third largest earthquake to hit the Americas this year, and follows the 7-maganitude Haiti earthquake and the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile. Those earthquakes killed 300,000 and 450 respectively. Three people have been reported dead from the Baja California earthquake so far. The quake hit south of Tijuana, and was felt as far north as Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, and as far east as Arizona and Las Vegas. The greatest structural damage has been to Mexico. The US Geological Survey reported that this was the largest earthquake to hit the area in almost 18 years. Kathy Gonzalez, who lives in San Diego is visiting friends in Salt Lake City for the holiday weekend. Sunday, Kathy watched a CNN report about the earthquake and was worried about her family in San Diego. “It has been such a long time since we’ve had a major earthquake in San Diego. I checked on my family and they are fine.” | | | | |
