Situation:

Over 100 people are dead in Rio de Janeiro after torrential rain on Tuesday triggered flooding and mudslides. About 287 people have been rescued, but the death toll stands at 102 this morning. The flooding and mudslides began on Tuesday as torrential rain poured down. As reported by CNN, the city's Mayor Eduardo Paes stated that a record-breaking 11.3 inches of rain inundated the city within 24 hours on Tuesday. AccuWeather.com found an official rainfall observation that was taken at Rio de Janeiro's Galeão International Airport (information obtained from the World Meteorological Organization). The airport reported 6.42 inches of rain in 24 hours, ending at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday. The Associated Press stated that most of the victims perished in the city's hillsides. The homes of the dead got buried by tons of mud and rubble. The weather will not entirely cooperate with cleanup and recovery efforts. Showers today will replace the flooding rain as a storm pushes away. The showers will continue to stream occasionally onshore into at least Friday. The showers will be most numerous over the higher terrain south of Rio de Janeiro, but some could still drift over the city.
