Description:

A student at Metro State College of Denver died Thursday from a suspected case of bacterial meningitis, health officials said. No further information was available on the student or how he or she contracted the disease. Their identity was not released. School officials say there is not currently a known outbreak of meningitis on the Auraria Campus, which is home to 23,000 students attending Metro State, the Community College of Denver, and the University of Colorado-Denver. However, representatives from the campus health center are contacting students who were previously in class with the victim. "For persons who develop meningococcal disease, the illness may occur very suddenly and get worse rapidly," said Steve Monaco, director of the Health Center at Auraria, stressing that immediate medical care is required as soon as symptoms are experienced. Those symptoms include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, irritability, sleepiness, sensitivity to light, rash, nausea, vomiting and being disoriented or confused, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
