Description: At least 31 people have been killed after torrential rain caused landslides and flooding in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, officials have said. Eight people died in Rio de Janeiro city after more than 7cm (3in) of rain fell in 15 hours, while 14 others died in the neighbouring city of Niteroi. Officials in nearby Sao Goncalo said flooding there had killed nine people. Rio de Janeiro's mayor has closed all schools and urged workers to stay at home as most main roads are flooded. In an interview with TV Globo on Tuesday morning, Eduardo da Costa Paes said the situation on the city's streets was "absolute chaos". "All the important roads are blocked," he said, adding that trying to traverse the flooding posed an "enormous risk". Santos Dumont airport, which handles domestic flights, was closed for two hours on Monday night, causing a number of delays.
