Description:

A swarm of honeybees attacked as many as 20 students at Panjab University on Monday evening, leading to chaos on the campus. The students belonged to department of laws (evening shift). The incident occurred around 5.30pm, when the branch of an old tree snapped, falling on a motorcycle and a car parked there, damaging the vehicles. As soon as the hive was disturbed, the bees went on a rampage, stinging those present near the spot. A student of final year in the department, Harjot Singh, was present nearby when the beehive came down. "Before anybody could react, the bees attacked students. While some rushed inside the department, others reached for their cars. The ones who could not make it were stung. Many were rushed to the hospital." While students claimed that the branch broke due to the weight of the hive, the department chairperson claimed the tree was old. Sources said the authorities had been warned about the bees many times, but to no effect. Department chairperson P S Jaswal said, "We’ve informed the public health department about other beehives near the department. A team is scheduled to visit on Tuesday. Students have been asked not to stand under these trees till the hives are brought down."
