The explosion was reported about 3pm at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston. The company says the mine has a history of releasing vast amounts of highly combustible methane gas. The mine, which covers several square miles, is operated by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co. Nine emergency crews numbering six members each are at the scene for search and rescue, a federal official adds.
