Description:

Emergency crews are on the scene of a coal mine explosion in Raleigh County, WV, about 30 miles south of Charleston. As many as 21 miners are feared missing. The incident occurred about 3 PM at Performance Coal's Uppper Big Branch Mine-South near Naoma, WV. Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), issued a press release late Monday confirming the disaster and added, "MSHA District Manager Robert Hardman is on the scene, along with a family liaison. Rescue efforts are underway." According to MSHA statistics, the accident rate at the mine has been higher than the national average in seven of the last 10 years. Performance Coal is owned by Massey Energy.
