Description: Emergency crews are on the scene of a coal mine explosion in Raleigh County, WV, about 30 miles south of Charleston. As many as 21 miners are feared missing. The incident occurred about 3 PM at Performance Coal's Uppper Big Branch Mine-South near Naoma, WV. Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), issued a press release late Monday confirming the disaster and added, "MSHA District Manager Robert Hardman is on the scene, along with a family liaison. Rescue efforts are underway." According to MSHA statistics, the accident rate at the mine has been higher than the national average in seven of the last 10 years.
