Event: Landslide
Location: Peru Departmento de Huanuco Ambo

Number of Deads: 28 person(s)
Number of Injured: 50 person(s)
Number of Missing: 26 person(s)

Situation:

The Andean town of Ambo, in Huanuco region, is still looking for all the victims buried under the avalanche of mud rocks that has hit the place this weekend. Oficial figures mention 28 fatalities; however, another 26 residents are still missing, so local and regional authorities fear that the total number may reach 50. Hipolito Cruchaga, Regional Director of Civil Defense system, told Peru21 that the rescue efforts will continue”in a limited way” since it removing the enormous amount of mud that has fallen on the area “is impossible.” Meanwhile, the government has declared the state of emergency during 60 days in the provinces of Ambo and Leoncio Prado, to make it easier to carry out immediate actions to help affected people. Prime Minister Javier Velásquez arrived in the area carrying food aid, blankets, tents and more supplies for 600 residents.
