Description:

Villagers have blocked access to river tunnels as they hunt for a python which strangled a boy to death on Sumatra island more than a week ago, Indonesian police said today. Police chief captain Joshua Tampubolon said residents in Percut Sei Tuan in Deli Serdang district joined the search for the 23ft (7m) snake which killed a 13-year-old boy on March 21. On Sunday, they closed off waterway tunnels built by a local textile company for its industrial waste, where the reptile was believed to be hiding. Capt Tampubolon said the victim had been swimming with three friends in the Tembung River when the python emerged to attack him, strangling and nearly swallowing him before villagers armed with spears forced it to flee.
